On The Waterfront

I've just done the cover art and a stack of other pics for On The Waterfront for Criterion... Design and art direction by Eric Skillman

  1. My second thought, after spending a great deal of time admiring the cover, was that you must have done it.

I think this may be your best Criterion cover yet. Stunning work!

  3. I absolutely love these. The balance of simplicity and detail is amazing.

From a technical side, knowing that these images will be printed, what size/ dpi do you set your files up at? Also, are you given these perimeters ahead of time or are they simply something you've developed over your career?

    Thanks,
    Kyle

  4. These were all drawn no larger than A4 and scanned at 1200dpi as bitmaps. Then Criterion re-sized everything how they wanted it.

  5. FYI, your cover got some attention from notoriously cranky movie-blogger Jeffrey Wells:

  6. Thanks a lot for the information Sean. I find it interesting that you scan at 1200 dpi. Do you scan all your line art at 1200dpi bitmaps (Comic work included)?

I've always scanned my line art at 600 dpi bitmaps. Just wondering if you feel like the additional dpi adds to the final look of your art or if you simply want to ensure you've captured every possible detail.
