New Life Painting

Did a painting at last night's life drawing class...

2' x 2', acrylic on wood, about 90 minutes.

I must confess, I've always liked your art. It's got that peculiarly authentic hardboiled, dregs of life, stubbed out fag at the bottom of a cracked beer glass, empty but for a ring of dried froth and spit feel.

It's what made your work perfect for, say, Hellblazer.

It isn't the art of the defeated in life, but of the heroically unacknowledged, the champion willing to take on the consequences that come from looking under stones others won't even acknowledge without expecting a pat on the back for it.

I do like this particular painting on all sorts of levels. It's somehow both intensely personal and intensely detached. I know nothing about the subject herself, yet I have this intuitive sense I know her very well indeed, her joys AND her sorrows.

It's almost as if you're a scientist who uses a paintbrush instead of a scalpel to look under the surface of what we take to be reality.

Of course this could be complete bollocks, but I'm an Aquarian artist myself so I'd be highly surprised to find out I'm wrong.
