Work In Progress

Here's a panel from Criminal in 'pencil' stage. Actually it's a combination of lettering done in Illustrator, a collage of a couple of my own photos of New York and a found photo of a Mitsubishi Raider, and a few lines drawn with a blue marker. I'll try and pull all these elements together in the inks tomorrow...

An artist such as yourself! Why use photos?! I mean, I don't mean to disrespect, but thats like cheating, eh?

Well, for a panel like this, I like to make it look as real as possible. I didn't want the buildings and vehicles to look generic, which they probably would have if I'd drawn it from memory. Not being American makes it quite hard to get the details right. I don't really know what traffic lights and roadsigns and cars and phone booths and mailboxes and manhole covers look like in the States, so I usually need some help. Now if I had to draw sheep or fields or endless rain I'd only have to look out of the window...

your explanation makes sense, but no one said you should do it from memory, you can use those same photos for a reference. I mean, don't you think if you did it freehand you would have more freedom, because when you trace over photos, you have to settle for the angle and perspective in your footage. I bet sometimes the photo even dictates the composition of your panel, too. I believe that there's lot more fun when you lay it out the way you like it. This way your panel would look more attractive and lively, and none the less believable, because you can always use those photos for a ref.
